“State-of-the-art Hydrogen Gas Sensor for Fuel Cell Control: Higher energy efficiency in Higher temperature/High humidity atmosphere” by Niigata Technology Licensing Organization (Niigata TLO, in Niigata University, 8050, Ikarashi 2-choume, Nishi-ku, Niigata, Japan, http://www.niigata-tlo.com Yoji Yuki, CEO)

Niigata TLO has developed a "Unicorn-type" hydrogen gas (H2) detection sensor specifically designed for full-range H2 detection sensor, high-temperature, high-humid and high-pressure harsh environments in FC stack module.Niigata TLO is currently applying for several patents and confirmed the function and started mass production design.

When used to control fuel cell (FC) stacks, hydrogen gas can be used to improve the energy efficiency of Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Vehicle (FCV), Bus, Heavy Machinery, and Airplanes, etc.Aiming for dissemination in cooperation with companies by licensing out the patent technology.

The FC stack, which is powered by fuel cell vehicles (FCVs), introducing commercial grade pure hydrogen gas, and oxygen (O2) from the atmosphere to generate electricity.Inert nitrogen (N2) enters the hydrogen fuel chamber through the electrolyte membrane, but there is a problem that usable hydrogen is also purged when disposed of at regular intervals to eliminate nitrogen accumulation in the system and avoid significant decrease in output. The unicorn-shaped hydrogen sensor has a new structure in which the element is covered in glass or other materials, and the electromotive force is detected by the platinum of the detection electrode slightly exposed at the tip.

Since it overcame the weakness of the company's conventional products, which had melted in the harsh environment, it is expected to be used in FC stacks control.

Exhaust of nitrogen can be made according to the concentration of hydrogen, which is proportional to the invading nitrogen, facilitating the efficient use of hydrogen.According to Mr. Yoji Yuki, CEO, there are various hydrogen sensors in the world market, but none can be used for FC control service.as of this date except for the novel hydrogen gas sensor.

Niigata TLO was established in 2001 with the aim of transferring intellectual property generated from universities in Niigata Prefecture to the industries. The hydrogen sensor was developed and improved by Professor Emeritus Shuji Harada PhD of Niigata University and other colleagues of Niigata TLO.
